Jerry was born in New York City and also lived in Charleston, South Carolina, prior to moving to Charlotte when he was eight years old. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) with a Bachelor of Elementary Education, he was hired by the Lincoln County School system to serve as a 5th grade teacher at Catawba Springs Elementary School near Lake Norman. A few years later, he went back to UNCC and earned a Masters in Gifted Education. He was hired by Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools to serve as a Gifted Education Specialist and covered several schools simultaneously over the next 10 years. During this time, he also served as a math curriculum specialist at Shamrock Gardens Elementary School.

In 2005, Jerry earned his real estate license and was hired by JAV Realty to sell new construction. Two years later, he was hired by Prudential Carolinas as a broker for the next four years until he joined HM Properties in January 2012.

Jerry and his wife, Vickie, have two sons (15 and 12) and a rescue dog named Regis.
